When spring hits, I hear this question more than all other fitness questions. Let’s face it, we want to look good for summer, and for a lot of people, unless they have 6-pack ABS, they DON’T LOOK GOOD!
That being said, I’m not saying a person needs a 6-pack to be healthy and fit. But it can’t be argued that great looking abs are, well, great looking! They are a sign that the person sporting them, whether a guy or a girl, takes care of him or herself. That engenders a respect from a lot of people, because in our world of self-indulgence, it’s easy for all of us to just eat and drink what we want, when we want.
Did you notice I spoke about food and drink just now? And in connection with the topic on abs? That wasn’t a mistake. In fact, even though I labeled this post under 20% FITNESS, I could very well have labeled it under 80% NUTRITION.
BOTTOM LINE: 6-PACK ABS are primarily BUILT OR BROKEN in the KITCHEN, not the GYM!
ABS is short for abdominal muscles. They are the muscles of the abdomen, and therefore, WE ALL HAVE THEM! Even the guy with the biggest beer belly has abs!
The role of the abdominal muscles is primarily for spinal and back support. There are 6 abdominal muscles, but these ARE NOT the same 6 of the infamous 6-pack. In fact, at least one of the 6 – the transverse abdominus – cannot even be seen because it’s deep inside the body wrapped around the torso. Clearly, it’s the deepest ab muscle and very important in supporting the body core and posture.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I won’t go into all the abdominal muscles, since this isn’t the point of the post today. So what’s the name of the specific abdominal muscle that creates the awesome 6-pack in fit people? The rectus abdominus, and even though all the ab muscles can be developed, because the rectus abdominus is the most superficial of the ab muscles, when we sculpt and strengthen this set of muscles through proper nutrition and fitness, we notice!!! It’s like, wow! Check out that guy’s abs! Or wow that girl has awesome abs! Very powerful words indeed!
So, how do we sculpt and strengthen the rectus abdominus?
1) First, we need to remember that we all have these abs. For many of us, they are simply covered with
layers of fat cells so that they cannot be seen. So rather than tell you to do a million situps every day to get a 6-pack, I’m going to recommend getting a free health consultation to find out several things such as:
A. your overall weight
B. your body fat %
C. your lean muscle mass
D. your visceral fat count
E. your resting metabolic rate
I won’t go into describing what all these things mean, but the reason why these numbers or stats are important is that if you want your abs to show and you aren’t seeing them now, you probably need to lose some of the fat covering them. Some will need to lose less, some more.
But, and this is a big BUT – you cannot just start eating less, and eating like a piece of toast only for breakfast and maybe an apple for supper to get there. Do you know what will happen? You will lose fat, it’s true, because you will likely cut calories. But you will lack proper nutrients, and you will lose important muscle mass in that weight. You will likely be hungry, and crave junk snacks. You will be irritable and lack energy.
A proper nutrition program has to be done right for it to work and for you to stick to it. So go the link TEAM UP, and enter your info for a free health consultation and I will take care of that for you.
So a proper nutrition program is KEY to getting 6-pack ABS! As the fat melts off the midsection, those beautiful abdominals will stand out more and more.
2) Second, once you get enough weight off in the midsection to see the abs, you can think about building them much like we do our biceps, quads, chest, etc. Targeted abdominal exercises and exercise routines will cause blood to flow to those abs with tons of nutrients and oxygen, including protein. As time goes by, those muscles will tighten up and also bulge out more. You will look awesome! So yes, fitness is important to building great abs, but it’s secondary to nutrition in having a 6-pack to show off! There are so many great abdominal exercises out there. Everyone’s opinion is different as to what are better exercises than others. They pretty much all work, if you do them right. If you want to know what I do, shoot me a message. Otherwise, just Google “Best Exercises for 6-pack abs” or something like that. You won’t be short on choices.
If you decide to set out on a journey for 6-pack abs, take a before photo. Nothing like some motivation along the way seeing where you started and how far you’ve come. I do that with all my clients who see me about their nutrition and fitness goals. With warmer weather comes BBQs and opportunities to keep those abs hidden forever. Cheating is allowed, as long as it doesn’t happen all the time, and you know how to get back on track. If you need any help, let me know!
